The Meta-Pill was a weight loss supplement created by biochemist Fletcher DuBois as a means to lose weight. His theory was that boosting human metabolism to more efficiently burn off sugar and starch would result in weight loss among people suffering from obesity. He worked on this theory for several years behind the scenes before Dr. Paul Kirkwood accidentally revealed his research to Carter Hedison who then attempted to purchase the rights and ownership to the formula by both legal means and unlawful cesure. However, it was never revealed if DuBois actually finished his research, but he did conceal his research in a compartment of his basement lab. After his passing, his daughter, Janet DuBois, successfully lobbied the interest of philanthropist Jack Gates to acquire it which was complicated due to her confusing his identity with writer Jack Gable. Rachel Hedison separately pursued ownership of the formula in order to wrest a controlling interest in her family's company from her father. Unfortunately, the effects of the Meta-Pill later turned out to have dire consequences for anyone who used it. Its side effects included high blood pressure, heart palpitations, anxiety, severe migraines and nerve damage.
