Peter Vincent is an English-American actor, writer and director best known for the movies "Curse of the Werewolf," "Murder in the Family" and "The Legend of Hall Manor."
Born Herbert Leslie McHoolihee on November 25, 1928 in Teddington, England, Vincent was the youngest of two boys born to parents of Scottish ancestry. He started out as an actor at the age of eight, playing the young psychopath David Pratt in the 1936 psychological thriller "Murder in the Family." His older brother, Michael McHoolihee, later joined the RAF and later MI-6.
Moving to the United States before World War Two, Peter attended school at Erasmus High School in Brooklyn, New York and became a naturalized United States citizen on December 9, 1949. He moved back to London in 1947 and studied psychology and ancient history at King's College, making money by working back stage on the West End and as an understudy to Boris Karloff and Vincent Price, from whom he developed his stage name. He starred in productions of "Arsenic and Old Lace" and "Man of La Mancha," reinvigorating his acting career in the 1949 vampire flick as vampire killer Hector van Helsing in "Fingers of Fear." The heavy promotion of the film lead to Peter becoming a big success, and he was quickly typecast as a horror movie actor, starring in "Orgy of the Damned," "Jaws of the Vampire," "Psychedelic Death" and "Scream for Your Supper" among others. In between horror flicks, he also drew raves for performances in "How Blue Was The Ocean," "My Neighbor Nell," "The Neptune Adventure," "Cowbells and Broom Handles," and "Laddie Come Home." He also won a Best Actor Award for his role as the psychic Thomas Jefferson Spenser in "The Legend of Hall Manor" with Laura Claybourne.
By the Late 79s, horror movies fell in decline and Vincent starred mostly in television with appearances in "Cape-Man," "Art Exhibit," "Planet of the Sloths," "Incredible Island," "Wondrous Woman" and "The Karen Starr Show." He had a recurring role on Beyond Our Dreams as councilman Douglas Greer, but most of his later career was as a horror movie host featuring his old movies and others on "Fright Night" on Channel 13 WYIC in Los Angeles, California, following in the footsteps of horror movie hosts like Zacherley, Vampira, Elvira and Svengoolie.
Embracing his horror movie past, Vincent eventually became a big success working behind the scenes in the revived horror franchise, working as an advisor in "The Crutcherville Horror" and "The Legend of Chaney Manor" among others. He also starred as the host of the Direct-to-DVD "Ghosts of Hollywood" series revealing the locations haunted by the ghosts of forgotten movie stars. He also continued to make movies, such as Beyond Our Dreams: Return to Ashford Falls, "A Forest Story" and "It's A Rats Life." Meanwhile, in his private life, the tabloids claimed that Vincent hunted vampires and werewolves, but there is no veracity to these urban legends.
